About the Practice
Founded in 2009, AL Architect operates from Struga, North Macedonia with a global portfolio. We are 22 architects, landscape designers, and researchers united by a single conviction: that architecture must be built to last - in material quality, environmental performance, and human meaning.
Philosophy
Material Honesty
We believe in using materials for what they are, not what they appear to be. Concrete is poured to reveal its formwork. Steel is expressed at its connections. Timber weathers to its natural grey.
This is not asceticism - it is respect for the intelligence of natural systems and the craftspeople who work them.

We have never used a default style. Every project begins with the same question: what does this specific site, climate, culture, and programme require that nothing else does?
The answer produces architecture that belongs - that appears inevitable rather than imposed.

Design Process

2 – 4 weeks
Discovery & Brief
We begin every project with deep listening. Site visits, stakeholder interviews, and contextual research form the foundation. We don't start designing until we understand the full human and physical context.

4 – 8 weeks
Concept Design
Ideas are tested quickly through physical models, sketches, and digital explorations. Multiple directions are pursued simultaneously - we believe the best solution emerges from comparison, not conviction.

8 – 16 weeks
Design Development
The chosen concept is refined into a coherent technical system. Material palettes are tested. Structural and environmental performance is modeled. Regulatory compliance is confirmed.

6 – 12 weeks
Technical Documentation
Every surface, connection, and specification is documented with precision. Our technical drawings are the blueprint from which builders work - clarity here prevents costly changes on site.

Duration of construction
Construction Administration
We remain deeply involved through construction - weekly site visits, responding to RFIs within 24 hours, and protecting design intent without compromising buildability.
06
18 months post-completion
Handover & Legacy
Completion is not the end. We conduct post-occupancy evaluations at 6 and 18 months, documenting how the space performs against the original brief and incorporating learnings into future work.
